Competitions for Icelandic horses are very different from usual horse shows. You can expect a Tolt Event, 4-Gait- and 5-Gait-Events, a Pace Event and a Pace Race, often with different classes for adults, youngsters and children.
In Iceland, many shows and competitions are held every year, with the "Landsmot." National Show as a climax once every 2 years. The largest contest grounds are only 7.5 km away from Leirubakki.
In many European countries, as well as in Canada and the United States, there are Societies of Icelandic Horse owners, organizing shows, competitions, meetings and conferences. Also, there are a number of magazines about Icelandic horses, in many different languages. The Societies are united in an international organization, FEIF, which was founded in 1969. FEIF organizes many international shows and meetings, for both adults and youngsters.
Most spectacular, of course, are the World Championships, which are held in different countries every two years.
